RoboBuggy Balloon Pop® — Comprehensive Guide

Purpose: Balloon Pop is a simple visual-motor game in which the player detects a balloon, reaches or points to it, and touches it before it disappears. The adjustable size, speed and visual-field settings allow the same basic task to be made easier or more demanding.

1. How the game works

Each session lasts 30 seconds.
A balloon appears on screen. Touch or click it directly to pop it.
A successful response adds to the score and balloons-popped total.
If the balloon remains on screen longer than the time allowed by the selected speed, it is counted as missed and another balloon appears.
RoboBuggy and the moving meadow scenery provide additional visual information, so the player must maintain attention to the target balloons.

2. Settings and what they change

Progression principle: change one setting at a time when you want to understand why performance changed. For example, keep Normal size and Mid-field constant while changing only speed.

3. What the results mean

For progress tracking, compare results obtained under the same settings and similar conditions. A faster time or higher score under easier settings should not be treated as equivalent to the same result under harder settings.

Transfer is not automatic: improvement in the game does not by itself prove improvement in a particular daily activity. Everyday function should be assessed directly as well.

7. Visual field, visual scanning and spatial awareness

Visual field means the area that can be seen while the eyes are directed ahead. In Balloon Pop, balloons can be restricted to the central area, spread into the mid-field, or appear across the full screen. This changes how widely the player needs to search and can increase the demand on visual scanning and spatial attention.

Relevance after stroke or acquired brain injury

Some people after stroke or acquired brain injury can have a visual-field loss, such as hemianopia, or visual inattention/neglect. These are different problems: visual-field loss concerns what can be seen within the visual field, whereas neglect is primarily an attentional problem in which stimuli on one side may not be adequately attended to. A person may also have both.

Because Balloon Pop requires repeated searching for targets in different screen locations, it may provide a structured opportunity to practise visual scanning and observe spatial search behaviour. For example, a facilitator might notice that the player consistently takes longer to find balloons on one side, misses more targets there, or uses deliberate head and eye movements to compensate.

Using the visual-field settings progressively

Central keeps targets closer to the centre and can reduce the width of the search required. Mid-field increases the scanning area. Full screen provides the widest search area and can place greater demands on scanning, spatial attention and visually guided reaching. When tracking progress, keep the visual-field setting and other game settings consistent across comparison sessions wherever possible.

8. Using Balloon Pop in a structured session

Position the player comfortably and ensure the screen is stable and reachable.
Choose a starting setting that allows successful participation without removing all challenge.
Record the exact size, speed and visual-field settings used.
Where possible, repeat several sessions under identical settings before drawing conclusions from a trend.
Progress one variable at a time: for example Normal → Small balloons, or Slow → Normal speed, or Central → Mid-field.
Observe qualitative information as well as the score: scanning pattern, hesitation, reach path, fatigue, posture, compensatory movements and whether one part of the screen appears more difficult.
Stop or reduce difficulty if the player becomes uncomfortable, excessively fatigued, frustrated or unsafe.

Example graded sequence

Entry: Large + Slow + Central → Developing: Normal + Normal + Mid-field → Higher challenge: Small and/or Fast + Full screen. This is only a suggested progression; settings should be matched to the individual.

9. Reporting

A useful session note can record: date; device/screen and playing position; hand used; balloon size; speed; visual field; score; balloons popped; misses; accuracy; average reaction time; assistance given; observations; and any reason the session was stopped or modified.
